Publishing research
Funder policies
To comply with the Wellcome Trust Open Access (OA) policy, when publishing your research, please make sure that:
- The Author Accepted Manuscript (AAM) is made freely available from EuropePMC upon publication (Wellcome does not allow any embargo!)
- The manuscript is available under a Creative Commons Attribution (CC-BY) licence
- The manuscript includes a data availability statement
When publishing in a fully open-access journal (the Gold OA route), the Article Processing Charge (APC) will be covered by Wellcome. You can check whether the journal is fully open-access here.
Wellcome does not cover APCs for publishing open-access in hybrid journals. If you wish to publish in a hybrid journal, you can choose the OA Green Route:
- publish in a hybrid journal as a subscription-only manuscript (which does not usually carry any charges)
- at the same time, deposit the AAM in an open-access repository under a CC-BY license (you have to deposit it in EuroPMC, but you can also deposit it in Oxford’s own ORA).
You need to make sure that the University has an agreement with your chosen hybrid journal that lifts any embargo on the publication - the open-access AAM has to be available immediately.
The University’s block grant can only cover hybrid APCs if your research is funded by CRUK or British Heart Foundation. You can find more information on Oxford's OA policy and cost covering here.
If you have a question about complying with Wellcome's OA policy, you can ask the Oxford University OA Helpdesk.
This tool is a quick and easy way to check how you can comply with your funder's policies.
